A small strand of tissue called the frenum connects the tongue to the floor of the mouth and the lips to the gums. When this frenum is too short, thick, or tight, it can restrict normal mouth function and development.
About 4-10% of infants are born with restrictive frenums, commonly referred to as tongue or lip ties. Proper diagnosis involves a thorough evaluation of oral tissue mobility and function. A frenectomy, the procedure to remove the excess tissue, is performed to restore proper oral function.
Lip and tongue ties can significantly hinder a successful breastfeeding experience for both mothers and babies. When the tongue or lip can’t move freely, it can prevent the baby from latching and effectively transferring milk. This can cause mothers to experience cracked or bleeding nipples, pain, infection, mastitis, and breast engorgement. Babies may show symptoms such as poor weight gain, colic or reflux, sliding off the nipple, weak suction, biting or chewing the nipple, frustration, and exhaustion during nursing.
If a tongue or lip tie is left untreated, it can lead to various issues over time. However, our doctors prioritize function over appearance and may suggest monitoring the situation to see if intervention is necessary as the child grows. Untreated ties can lead to problems such as speech and articulation difficulties, orthodontic issues, gingival recession, food impaction, dental decay, cavities, aversion to solid food, and challenges with chewing and swallowing.
A frenectomy is a procedure that releases tongue or lip ties, allowing for optimal movement and control of oral tissues. Our office uses advanced laser technology, specifically a carbon dioxide light screen laser, to perform this procedure efficiently. This method minimizes bleeding and shortens healing time.
After the frenectomy, we provide detailed post-operative care instructions and exercises to ensure proper healing. Our goal is to support you and your child in establishing a healthy breastfeeding relationship. We allocate time each week to perform frenectomies and collaborate closely with lactation consultants, occupational therapists, and body workers to ensure comprehensive support for your family’s long-term success.
